Realist Ethnography Symposium
The symposium explored the theoretical and epistemological stakes in conducting ethnography in a “realist” mode. How can ethnography be effectively used to capture the invisible structures, discourses, and motivations that shape subjects’ actions? What is at stake in using interpretative methods for analyzing complex realities? In addition to exploring these important methodological and epistemological questions, the symposium presenters also delved into the theories of the self and of the social world that ground approaches to “realist” ethnography.
