Now entering its fourth year, the Critical Realism Discussion Group provides an online forum for presenting and discussing critical realist research. We consider the application of critical realism as well as theoretical questions that have implications for applied research. Sessions run monthly during academic term-time in a mix of formats, from the more traditional presentations with Q&A, through to more dynamic discussions around key topics.
Supported by the Critical Realism Network, the Critical Realism Discussion Group originally emerged from a series of online introductory workshops. These are all available to watch online, with suggested accompanied reading: https://criticalrealismnetwork.org/workshops/
But attendees need not have extensive prior knowledge. We welcome those at any career stage and try to be welcoming and accessible for early career researchers, maintaining a friendly and inclusive environment. We are an interdisciplinary group, with participants from across the social sciences and beyond. Attendees are mostly UK-based but we do have attendees from around the world, and our timings are accessible for those in the Americas as well as Europe and Africa. Sessions usually run on the last Wednesday of the month at 4pm UK time.
To sign up, please email Jack Newman (jack.newman@manchester.ac.uk) and Adam Nichol (adam.j.nichol@northumbria.ac.uk). If you are interested in presenting, please get in touch, though we’d encourage you to first join as a participant.
