Centre for Critical Realism (CCR)

The Centre for Critical Realism (CCR) was established as a charitable trust in November 1996 with the general aim of supporting and promoting activities, both theoretical and practical, concerned with the development of realist social theory and philosophy.

The CCR’s initial  projects included the establishment (in August 1997) of an Annual Conference, a Seminar Series, a Web site, and the Newsletter Alethia. It also instigated the formation of the International Association for Critical Realism (IACR), which, since 1998, has existed as an independent international professional organisation.

Since 1999 the Annual Conference has been taken over, and run, by IACR. The Newsletter, Alethia, was also taken over by IACR, and developed into the Journal of Critical Realism, a peer reviewed journal from November 2002.

Today the CCR operates as a organising and consulting body for critical realism, and in conjunction with Routledge, produces a Book Series on realist social theory and philosophy, and other related topics. If you are interested in discussing a book proposal for the Routledge Series please contact the Managing Editor, Gareth Wiltshire.

We also administer the criticalrealismnetwork.org website, which was originally set up by a project team at Yale University, and organise the Critical Realism Matters series of webinars, The webinars are designed to showcase and celebrate the enormous potential of critical realism for a global audience. They aim to share CR’s essential features and key ideas with new audiences (especially early career researchers and interested students), and to show just some of the ways in which CR is being applied.
